Chapter 13
âThe seamstress is an unusual sort, just be prepared.â Trey nudged his shoulder into mine as we walked back to the castle.
âOkay. I will.â We walked in silence for a few moments. âHopefully sheâll make Belinda a dress in a color other than a shade of purple,â I added. âHer closet is filled with purple dresses, which is fine except she likes other colors as well. I thought if I could talk to the seamstress, she might be willing to help.â
Trey stopped. âThatâs very thoughtful. Most Underlings wouldnât go to so much trouble for the Royal they serve.â
I shrugged. âI like Belinda.â
Trey shook his head. âYouâre a strange girl, Catriona.â
I gasped jokingly, placing my hands over my heart. âA man of compliments, I see.â
He laughed. âSorry.â We went down a short set of stairs off to the right of the main hall and headed toward the back of the palace. Trey stopped at an unassuming door that led to a set of stairs heading down. âIn you go,â he said, glancing around to make sure no one was watching.
âRight.â The steps were wide and well lit, but I couldnât make myself take the first step. I didnât know Trey all that well and I had no idea where the stairs would lead.
âDonât be scared. Madam Vienna is down there.â
âYou sure?â
âYes,â he said.
âAlright.â I went down several steps. The door closed and Trey followed behind me.
When weâd gone down several flights, Trey spoke again. âLike I said, I want you to be prepared for Madam Vienna. Sheâs a strange⦠creature. Doesnât look like you or me. She prefers the damp and the cold of the basement. But, well youâve seen her dresses. Sheâs got real vision and is beyond talented.â
His words stopped me in my tracks. I knew about the Nyght students and I even met one. A werewolf, but I hadnât thought about what jobs they would get once they finished their schooling. âShe was a Nyght student?â I asked.
âI have no idea.â Trey shook his head. âItâll be fine. Unless youâve changed your mind?â He patted my arm, trying to offer comfort. âShe looks odd, but sheâs nice enough. Unless youâre too haughty to see beyond her unusual appearance?â
âIâm not,â I said, shocked he would say such a thing, but then he really didnât know me that well. And I didnât really know him either.
âGood.â
I swallowed, determined to force down my fears. âIâm ready.â
âIâll go first.â Trey started down the stairs again. He picked up the pace until I had to jog to keep up with him.
The door at the bottom was large and rounded at the top with black metal bars crossing the top and bottom. The knob was enormous but opened easily.
Before Trey stepped inside, I put a hand on his arm. âWhat does she look like?â I asked, nervous. I didnât want to embarrass myself or make Madam Vienna uncomfortable.
âYouâll see.â
âGreat.â Iâd see the seamstress and probably run away screaming or worse. Rolling my shoulders back, I followed Trey inside.
