Chapter 13

“The seamstress is an unusual sort, just be prepared.” Trey nudged his shoulder into mine as we walked back to the castle.

“Okay. I will.” We walked in silence for a few moments. “Hopefully she’ll make Belinda a dress in a color other than a shade of purple,” I added. “Her closet is filled with purple dresses, which is fine except she likes other colors as well. I thought if I could talk to the seamstress, she might be willing to help.”

Trey stopped. “That’s very thoughtful. Most Underlings wouldn’t go to so much trouble for the Royal they serve.”

I shrugged. “I like Belinda.”

Trey shook his head. “You’re a strange girl, Catriona.”

I gasped jokingly, placing my hands over my heart. “A man of compliments, I see.”

He laughed. “Sorry.” We went down a short set of stairs off to the right of the main hall and headed toward the back of the palace. Trey stopped at an unassuming door that led to a set of stairs heading down. “In you go,” he said, glancing around to make sure no one was watching.

“Right.” The steps were wide and well lit, but I couldn’t make myself take the first step. I didn’t know Trey all that well and I had no idea where the stairs would lead.

“Don’t be scared. Madam Vienna is down there.”

“You sure?”

“Yes,” he said.

“Alright.” I went down several steps. The door closed and Trey followed behind me.

When we’d gone down several flights, Trey spoke again. “Like I said, I want you to be prepared for Madam Vienna. She’s a strange… creature. Doesn’t look like you or me. She prefers the damp and the cold of the basement. But, well you’ve seen her dresses. She’s got real vision and is beyond talented.”

His words stopped me in my tracks. I knew about the Nyght students and I even met one. A werewolf, but I hadn’t thought about what jobs they would get once they finished their schooling. “She was a Nyght student?” I asked.

“I have no idea.” Trey shook his head. “It’ll be fine. Unless you’ve changed your mind?” He patted my arm, trying to offer comfort. “She looks odd, but she’s nice enough. Unless you’re too haughty to see beyond her unusual appearance?”

“I’m not,” I said, shocked he would say such a thing, but then he really didn’t know me that well. And I didn’t really know him either.

“Good.”

I swallowed, determined to force down my fears. “I’m ready.”

“I’ll go first.” Trey started down the stairs again. He picked up the pace until I had to jog to keep up with him.

The door at the bottom was large and rounded at the top with black metal bars crossing the top and bottom. The knob was enormous but opened easily.

Before Trey stepped inside, I put a hand on his arm. “What does she look like?” I asked, nervous. I didn’t want to embarrass myself or make Madam Vienna uncomfortable.

“You’ll see.”

“Great.” I’d see the seamstress and probably run away screaming or worse. Rolling my shoulders back, I followed Trey inside.
